In this lesson we’ll start to learn about plurals in Italian.

We’ll start by looking at words that we have aready learned in the singular form.

There are a few basic rules that will work in the majority of cases with plurals.

  • As we already know, Italian nouns can be masculine or feminine. Usually the last letter of the nouns decides the gender. Masculine words usually end in “o” and feminine words usually end in “a”, but there are many exceptions.
  • If an Italian word ends in “o” (masculine), this will change to “i” in the plural.
  • If an Italian word ends in “a” (feminine), this will change to “e” in the plural.
  • Examples:

    albero (tree) => alberi (trees)

    casa (house) => case (houses)

  • Sometimes singular Italian words end in “e”. These words are most often masculine (but not always!). Usually this changes to “i” in the plural.

    Example:

    cane (dog) => cani (dogs)
